Job Description:

The School Nurse works directly with the other members of the Health Office in the development, implementation and management of a coordinated school health program, which is consistent with the Worcester Academy philosophy and the Massachusetts state guidelines and regulations governing school health and Nursing. The School Nurse has a multi-faceted role within the Worcester Academy school setting, one that supports the physical, mental, emotional and social health of a diverse community including faculty, staff and students. The School Nurse works directly with the Director of Health Services, the school physician, Athletic Trainers, student advisers, faculty and families in assessing planning, implementing and evaluating school/health programs/policies and student health plans to meet student’s health care needs and assist the student achievement of academic goals and success. Additional responsibilities include educating and supporting the students and faculty regarding matters of health, wellness, injury and disease prevention, risk management and the delegation of medication administration. Schedule: 40 hours/week (first shift - Monday through Friday, one on-call weekend a month at minimum,* need to be flexible about starting time, etc. and be responsive to emergencies.) Academic school year (approximately mid-August through mid-June).

Responsibilities:

  • Function within the policy, protocol and work standards established by the Director of Health Services
  • Implement federal, state and local health regulations.
  • Demonstrate clinical competency in school nursing practice:
    • Understanding and clinical competence in normal growth and development of children, adolescents and young adults
    • Recognize changes in student’s physical and mental condition and take appropriate action.
    • Adapt nursing care interventions to meet the health care needs of the student’s mental condition, emotional status with consideration of developmental level.
  • Develop a care plan to meet student’s health care needs and academic goals and success. Collaborating with PCP, faculty, advisers, residential life, coaches and athletic trainers and parents/guardians
  • Provide care to students with chronic, acute and emergent health care needs based on the student’s condition and, when needed, in consultation with school physician, while meeting the standards of school nursing practice.
  • Provide emergency medical care to all members and visitors of the WA community. Function in coordination with the Worcester Academy Emergency Response Team.
  • Demonstrate clinical competency in school nursing practice: Recognize changes in student’s physical and mental condition and take appropriate action. Adapt nursing care interventions to the student’s physical condition, emotional status, and developmental achievement
  • Maintain confidential records, HIPPA compliance, student insurance information, health findings, and other relevant health data.
  • Ability to maintain Electronic Medical Records
  • Assure all enrolled student meet Department of Public Health requirements for immunizations
  • Review all medical records, identify health issues and communicate with appropriate personal/prior to and throughout the academic year.
  • Make referrals for students to outside health care providers, dentists, eye care etc.
  • Function in coordination and as a member of a team for the overall health, safety and well-being of the Worcester Academy Community.
  • Participate in continuing Education Programs to supplement knowledge that will enhance care delivered to the Community.
  • Maintain CPR/ AED instructor Certification Sensitivity and appreciation for a culturally diverse community

On Call responsibilities

  • Phone consultation with Residential faculty and student of concern
  • Medication delegation
  • Assessment and referral to Urgent care or ER

*On Call time during the week may be expected based on need to communicate with Residential Faculty, Coaches and Athletic Trainers coordinating student health care when the Health Office is closed. RN must be available to answer and/or respond to calls within 20 minutes and must be within 50 miles of campus while on call with reliable transportation if needed on campus. One weekend a month is based on WA ability to hire a 2nd, and 3rd shift on call RN/LPN.

Experience and Skills:

Education

  • The School Nurse will be a licensed registered nurse in Massachusetts and maintain that status as current.
  • A minimum of a baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited college or university is required.
  • Certification from the National Board of Certification of School Nurses is valued.

The nurse will demonstrate the following competencies;

  • Ability to assess and monitor health care trends, maintain electronic and paper medical records and implement coordinated health care model and standing orders.
  • Desire to work in a prestigious academically rigorous and culturally diverse adolescent residential community.
  • Ability to work effectively, collaboratively and respectfully with parents, students, faculty and health care providers
  • Ability to accept supervision and guidance

Experience, Skills and Abilities

    • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a registered nurse, preferably working in Pediatrics or Adolescent medicine.
    • Prior experience working in a school environment is highly desirable.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to navigate a multi-building campus in all weather conditions
  • Must be able to read, write and verbally communicate to employees, students, parents and medical professionals.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs.
  • Must be able to bend, kneel, squat, reach, lift and stand for long periods of time.
